Before treatment

In general

Caregivers are advised to finish kids’meal/feeding 3 hours before the appointment. Due to the nature of dentistry, gag reflex is often found even during checkup or cleaning. It is likely children come in with full stomach will encounter aspiration pneumonia if kids become gaggy and vomit.

We also encourage children go to bathroom before they sit in dental chair. Kids tend to go to bathroom more often under stress. Once treatment is initiated, we need to complete in a timely fashion before local anesthesia wears off (if needed) or little ones out of patience. Going to bathroom before treatment will help tremendously with the flow and reassure children are able to sit a while longer for designated dental work.

Conscious sedation and general anesthesia

* Your child must be on an empty stomach from 12am the night before your appointment. A tiny bit of clear fluids are allowed up to 3 hours prior to your appointment.

* If your child has a cold, fever or ear infection, please inform us the day before for evaluation whether to reschedule your appointment is deemed necessary.

* Please dress your child in loose fitting and comfortable clothing.

*Parent or caregiver is advised not to leave our office while the child is receiving dental treatment.

*Keep our office up to date with any drugs your child is taking currently and/or any drug reactions and change of medical history.

During and after treatment

During treatment

Parent or caregiver is advised not to leave our office while the child is receiving dental treatment.

After treatment
If local anesthesia is used:

Local anesthetic sometimes is used to numb your child’s mouth during the procedure; your child may have the tendency to bite or chew their lips, cheeks, and/or tongue and/or rub and scratch their face after treatment. Please observe your child carefully to prevent any injury to these areas. You may need to continuously remind the child to leave the area alone until the area is no longer numb to avoid irritation. As always, Please call our office with any questions or concerns that you might have.

Conscious sedation and general anesthesia

*Your child will not be able to resume normal daily activities and will require constant supervision for the remainder of the day, after their appointment.

*Your child will be drowsy and will need to be monitored very closely. They cannot go back to school/camp or attend any activities or parties.

*It is not unusual for your child to sleep for several hours after their general anesthesia visit.

*The first meal should be light and easily digestible, please keep your child away from dairy products until the day following your appointment.
